What Exactly is Reflux, and How Do You Know if Your Baby Has it?

There are three kinds of reflux, and they are all upsetting for babies and their parents. The first is regular reflux, which is very common.

The baby spits up occasionally, but still keeps down plenty of food and isn’t overly upset when they spit up their food.

The second type of reflux is known as GERD, the acronym for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease.

This type of acid reflux is more serious than regular reflux and is diagnosed in about 1 in 300 babies.

Babies with GERD often struggle with growth. They may seem to hate the bottle, and act like they have a stuffy nose or a cold.

Although feeding your baby the best formula for spit up may help them feel a bit better, babies with GERD often need to take medication.

Silent GERD is the third type of reflux. This type is harder to notice because your baby will still be fussy and not like eating, but you may not even see their spit up.

Babies with silent GERD often cry after meals because they swallow their spit up and it burns their throat on the way back down as well as the way up.

And here what nurse Dani think about how you can know if your baby has reflux or if I just have a fast flow when nursing:

How to Help Your Baby’s Reflux

Your baby’s tiny esophagus has trouble keeping food in the stomach because it isn’t fully formed.

You can’t help the formation of your baby’s esophagus, but there are some things you can do to make your baby feel more comfortable. Here are a few things to try:

  • Lay baby down on an incline. You can put a foam wedge or something similar under the mattress so that your baby’s head is higher than the rest of their body. This helps gravity work to keep the food down. (This baby lounger can be a great example)

  • Thicken the formula. The thick formula is heavier, which makes it harder to come back up your baby’s throat. Adding rice cereal to the formula is the most common way to make it thicker, but most parents find that it doesn’t work very well. Finding the best formula for spit up to help your baby is a much better option.
